impacts
creation of slums
because of the large number of people who want to migrate to sao paulo in search of jobs, income and a better quality of life. informal housing is often created around the city centre, these are not legally created and can have issues associated with them
services
education
many of the schools surrounding these areas can be underfunded and understaffed leading to decrease in education rates in these areas. children often don't prioritize school as they have part time jobs in order to help out their parents.
this means very little children in these environments make into into higher education or higher paying jobs leading to a cycle of poverty in these families
work
many people living in these favelas have to go into the informal sector meaning they do jobs like shoes shining, luggage carrying at airports, odd jobs around the city. either they do this or they work in labor or the manufacturing plants in the city
these jobs are neither well paying or secure meaning many can raise themselves above the poverty line and move themselves out of the favelas
facilities
electricity
there is very little houses in the favelas that have access to electricity, this means there is very little access to any form of online communication or access
sanitation
the sanitation and plumbing is almost non existent in many favelas meaning diseases can spread very easily, it also means that many of the rivers and waterways connecting parts of the city are often contaminated
Healthcare
there are not many healthcare facilities near the favelas and even though there is universal healthcare in brazil many of the residents of the favelas and slums deal with symptoms of illness as they cannot afford to take time off work
the global pandemic has made this issue even worse with covid spreading rapidly though these favelas and without proper preventative measures like masks, social distancing and and testing many residents of these favelas die from this, unable to seek healthcare because of the lack of transport and accessibility
political
tensions
because of the unauthorised houses being built around the city, often tensions can be created between the police and government and these residents as when they want to use the land they often have to kick all the residents out and move them or leave them homeless
government policies have to be put in place in order to ensure that these residents don't create more illegal accommodation. this can either mean managing who migrates or generating ways to make better houses or make the existing house better
location
São Paulo is located in the Southeast Region of Brazil on a plateau beyond the Serra do Mar, about 70 km (43 mi) from Brazil's coast at the Atlantic Ocean. It is the capital of the captaincy (state) of São Paulo, the most populous state in the country.
