What did I learn?
Bioloigcal essentialism: belief that being categorised bioloigxally as female or male naturally leads to behaviours that correspond with 'being a woman' or 'being a man' respectively. Assumes that hetereosexuality is a natural instinct
Anti-essentialism: view that identies are not fixed, universal or timeless, but are a product of discourses that prevail in particular times and cultures
Interpellation: the process whereby individuals become identified by others and come to identify themselves as a certain type of subject within a discourse
Intersex: people born with physical characteristics that do not fit the norms of female or male sex categories
Some cultures recognise a third or middle sex. For example, in some cultures in the Indian subcontient, there are people called 'hijrah' who are recognised as neither male nor female but as an intersex category
