The Heart of Yoga
Part II
Astanga Yoga
(or, Living In + With the World)
"We can never experience our real nature if we do not expose ourselves to change."
-
The things that happen to us as we practice (we cannot "do" them, they develop as we journey down our yoga path)
Yama (attitudes we hold toward everything outside of ourselves)
- ahimsa
- satya
- asteya
- brahmacarya
- aparigraha
Niyama (how we relate to ourselves inwardly)
- sauca
- samtosa
- tapas
- svadhyaya
- Isvapranidhana!
The things that prepare us for the "heart" of yoga - meditation practice to reach samadhi and kaivalya or "true liberation" - where we liberate purusa from prakriti!
The yogic journey is not linear, as in "First I do this, next I do that" rather it grows like a tree!
-
Dhayana - this is not something we can practice - it happens as dharana and dhyana come together through samyama - focused effort on ONE THING.
