Article Review- Case Study and the Flipped Classroom
Point 1: The lure of the flipped classroom
Students move at their own pace
doing "homework" in class helps teachers understand the issues students are having
teachers can customize/make changes to curriculum 24/7 and provide it to them
classroom time can be used in a more effective way
increased student achievement, interest, and engagement
use of technology is flexible and helps with "21st century learning"
Teachers are able to spend more time with students and build better relationships
students who miss class because they are attending another school event or are sick can watch lectures and stay caught up
It promotes students to think not only in class, but outside of class as well
They are more actively involved in the learning process
A common approach of a flipped classroom
Assign introductory video the night before for students to view
Student receive a set of guided questions related to the video to answer before class
In class students receive work to complete to review the information learned the previous night
Point 2: Pitfalls of the flipped approach
Students may be resistant for a few different reasons
They have to do work at home rather than be first taught the subject matter at school
(this is often solved by a short quiz online on in class, or by giving homework that requires the students to know the information obtained by outside reading or videos.)
They may come to school unprepared
The homework (readings and videos) must be tailored carefully so the students can complete the in-class activity
Finding quality videos can be complicated
Creating your own material can take a lot of time
Point 3: Instructional Video
Most teachers prefer online videos over reading material to accomplish preparing students out of class for the in-class activity they are going to do. Students prefer video as well.
These videos do not make up the entire class, but supplement to what is being learned in the class
the videos are valuable, flexible, and a cost-effective tool that can be watched more than once to help improved the mastery of the subject at hand
Most students find the videos, when delivered correctly and related to what they needed to know, useful, easy to follow, and effective in helping them understand the new material
Point 4: The future of the flipped classroom
Some of the obvious places to start a flipped classroom may be in areas like biology or anatomy where there are a large amount of teachers needing and using similar material
The videos can be content driven or scene setting.
At this time, the effort of flipping the classroom needs some direction with sharing of videos and cases.
We still have a long ways to go and teachers who flip their classroom are encourages to share their videos and case studies so other teachers can give the flipped classroom a try.
