Department Vision (Acting HoD)
Vision: To improve the quality of education at KS3 to bridge the learning gap for black minority boys and students with SEND
Implementation: Examine local context of needs within year group
Implementation: Create more thematic SOW which relates to local context
Implementation: Ensure cultural context is embedded in each SOW and cross referenced and numerous points within the curriculum
Implementation: Include metacognitive practices into SOW
Implementation: Boys lead within department. Links to pedagogy
Implementation: Improve the quality of learning in each SOW with regular review and department deep dives.
Intent: To move from a skills curriculum to a knowledge curriculum from KS3 to KS5.
To improve outcomes for students with SEND
Research: DfE documentation 2015 for improving quality of education - better use of metacognition to ensure students think about their learning.
Implementation: Reflection activities/exit tickets on metacognitive questioning.
To improve working memory by making retrieval and low stakes assessment explicitly embedded into SOW
Implementation: Curriculum review of current schemes of work. CPD on low stakes memory tasks to be delivered to the department and time given to staff to embed them within SOW.
To improve the modelling of high academic talk
Implementation: Rosenshine's questioning model, aspirational schemes of work. Questions directed to ensure metacognition. Literacy focus on teaching etymology.
To make more effective use of graphic organisers, style models and dual coding.
CPD within department to look at graphic organiser strategies. Add vocabulary organisers of tier 3 vocabulary applied consistently across each key stage.
Make assessments more chunked with clear scaffolds embedded
Implementation: Assessments to be modified to add a section a (tier 3 vocabulary), section b (select and retrieve/decoding) and section c (extended response). This to include self/peer marking for first two sections.
To make better use of formative and summative data to improve curriculum and outcomes
Intent: Create a bespoke CPD calendar to address key areas within the department
Implementation: DfE framework for CPD which is then discussed with Dept
Implementation: Send CPD questionnaire to department asking for CPD needs and CPD leads for academic, curriculum and teaching and learning CPD.
Implementation: Identify and plan for the short and long term CPD needs of the department to ensure continued improvement of curriculum and teaching and learning.
Intent: Create a pedagogy library for the department
Implementation: Look at feedback from learning walk and staff Ofsted questions and order pedagogy texts from a needs perspective
Intent: Improve the standardisation and moderation process of summative assessments
Intent: To improve the quality assurance process at the end of a unit of work.
Intent: To improve the confidence of the department in preparation of Ofsted.
Intent: To create a vertical and horizontal curriculum pathway which interleaves skills
