Anorexia Nervosa

Causes
Sociocultural explanations: body shape ideals which are internalised creating a discrepancy between self and ideal
Genetics: there is heritable component to AN, it runs in family
-
Genome wide association studies: the genome is scanned to try and identify genetic variation more typically found in those with AN. Around 8 novel variations have been identified
These variants seem to be within the brain, but there's still a lot of work to do
-
Research
-
Study recovered individuals: But behavioural/cognitive effects observed could be a 'scar' from malnutrition/binge/purging behaviours
-
Binge spectrum disorders
Signs and symptoms
BN: Purging which causes, Russell's sign (calluses on back of the hand), enlarged parotids glands, dental erosion, problems with swallowing, Gastro Intestinal symptoms, Palpitations
BED: recurrent binge eating episodes; Consume larger amount of food, lack of control, eating when full/not hungry, feeling depressed, disgusted, guilty or upset about eating
-
-
Main characteristics
Disturbance of eating habits or weight-control behaviour, Clinically significant impairment of physical/psychosocial functioning, disturbances not secondary to any other disorder
Associated with difficulty in day to day living and high mortality (AN mortality higher than SZ and major deepression)
Trans Diagnostic approach: its not the case that individuals only suffer from one category of an eating disorder but can transition
This may be due to common pathologies across disorders (about eating, weight and shape) which causes behaviours such as restriction, binging and compensatory behaviours
-
Comorbidities
AN: depression, anxiety, OCD and autism
BN/BED: depression, obesity, ADHD, substance abuse, self-harm and borderline personality disorder
Etiology
Genetic risk, development and environment
-
High relapse rate, duration of suffering is around 6 years
