Thoughts on Performance Improvement Programme
School Culture
Influences within school. How does the culture within the school promote and reward success and therefore encourage performance improvement?
E.g., Culture within Rugby? Rowing? Football? Cricket? Hockey?
How do we celebrate sport within the College?
Do you think sport at the College is performance based? Is it about enjoyment? Is there a balance and if so, do you think the balance is right?
Is sport at the College about having maximum participation and enjoyment? Is the focus on providing students with the tools for lifelong participation in physical activities or do you think it is about success with little thought to what happens post school?
Weights Room.
The College has invested in the construction and outfitting of a modern weights facility and staffed it with a qualified performance trainer. Has this influenced how students perceive sport and PIP at the College?
Facilities: The College invests heavily in providing quality facilities and in field maintenance and upkeep. E.g., cricket wickets, rugby, football fields, International quality hockey turf that has hosted NZ Men's and Women's international matches. How do we market our sporting facilities and success in SBC Prospectus ? Do we promote sporting excellence and if so how might this influence how students, parents and the wider community view sport?
Thought: A few years ago the College had over 80 rowers at South Island Champs. Almost 10th of the school rowing. An amazing statistic. More recently we have far fewer rowers but a strong focus on finishing on the podium. How might this influence the opportunity for students to take up rowing and could this have an affect on other aspect; e.g., enjoyment, learning a new activity?
Previous Experiences
What experiences do I already have in relation to PIP? E.g., Skill improvement programme; rugby, football, hockey; swimming athletics; etc.
How did I find these experiences? Were they valuable? Did I enjoy them? Did they progress my experiences in other areas? e.g., Learn to swim programme meant i could enjoy going to the beach, led to surfing and other water based activities.
Who set the goals; coach, parents, team, self?
PIP with the aim of competition performance improvement can be physical, mental, technical or tactical. Do PIP that you have been involved in or know of, focus more on any of the above areas? Are there aspects that perhaps have not been included e.g., mental?
Where might cost be a factor in PIP? At the College? Outside the College?
Other factors: Outside gym memberships - What factors might drive students to join commercial gyms? Does this mean some students could be excluded from College sports teams because they can't afford a gym membership and therefore won't make the team? Is this perception real or imagined?
NZ Sporting Culture
What Cultural Influences could have been present that helped to shape these PIP experiences?
National Sporting culture within NZ. High profile events. High Performance Sport NZ Funding Model that is based on international results.
European Influences v Polynesian Influences - How might these factors influence our thoughts on PIP?
The Media - seeing high performance athletes involved in Olympics, Winter Olympics, Red Bull Events, Super Rugby, etc. Recognising the training that goes into achieving these goals.
