microorganisms- viruses
common viral illnesses such as influenza and the cold are difficult to treat because viruses are not affected by antibiotics.
vaccination is when a harmless version of a disease is introduced into a person in order to simulate the production of antibodies and white blood cells against disease.
human diseases caused by viruses: colds, hepatitis, AIDS, Ebola, chicken pox, mumps; measles; German measles(rubella) and influenza (flue)
useful viruses: some viruses kill bacteria that are harmful for humans, viruses are used in genetic engineering.
harmful viruses: viruses are totally dependent on a host cell. they are parasites. they cannot grow or reproduce outside another cell. cells are damaged when the virus uses the cell's DNA and other cell contents for its own purposes.
microorganisms-fungi
fungi, along with bacteria, are decomposers that break down dead matter to substance such as carbon and nitrogen compounds.
these compounds are recycled back into living organisms, through: photosynthesis, nitrates from the soil.
there are a few fungi that cause minor health problems for humans: athlete's foot and ringworm. these are treatable
penicillin and other antibiotics are all based on natural chemicals produced by fungi. these are all examples of biotechnology.
