Waves: Introduction

In a transverse wave, the direction of disturbance is at right angles to the direction of propagation of the wave, that is the direction in which the wave travels.
In a longitudinal wave, the direction of the disturbances is parallel to the direction of the propagation of the wave.

Reflection:
Reflection occurs when the incident and the reflected ray are in the same medium. An obstacle like a plane mirror is needed.

Real and virtual images:
Real images are inverted and can be caught on the screen. These are formed when the rays are actually meeting.
Virtual images are upright, and cannot be caught on the screen. Rays only appear to be meeting at a point but they do not converge in reality. These are formed in the plane mirror.
