DRUGS FOR ALIMENTARY SYSTEM
Oral & Throat Preparation Agent
Antiseptic
Povidone Iodine
Trade: Betadine Gargle.
Indication: Treat minor throat infections.
Dosage: 10ml of undiluted solution, gargle for 30 seconds QID 14 days.
Anesthesia
Throat Lozenges (Lidocaine, Benzocaine & Cocaine)
Indication: Stop cough & lubricate irritated tissues of the throat (due to sore throat).
Antibiotic
Neomycin
Indication: Treat skin infections caused by bacteria.
Method Delivery: Topical creams, ointments & lotions.
Antiemetic
Indication: Treat nausea & vomiting.
Common drugs: Domperidone.
Drug reaction: Most antiemetic drugs act by blocking dopamine, serotonin, muscarinic or histamine receptors.
Antidiarrheal
Adsorbents
Indication: To attract & bind to irritants or other substances in the intestine / absorb toxins that cause diarrhea.
Common drugs: Bismuth subsalicylate & attapulgite.
Opioids
Indication: To reduce the muscle contraction of the intestine
Common drugs: Codeine phosphate & loperamide.
Oral Rehydration Preparation
Indication: To treat dehydration due to diarrhea & vomiting.
It made up of water & essential minerals (e.g. sodium & potassium).
Antacids
Indication: To neutralize the acidity in the digestive juices.
Systemic Effect
Definition: Antacids that systemically absorbed.
Common drugs: Sodium bicarbonate & Calcium carbonate.
Non-Systemic Effect
Definition: They are insoluble & poorly absorbed systemically.
Commong drugs: Magnesium trisilicate & Magnesium phosphate.
Antiulcer Histamine 2 Blockers
Definition: To block the H2 receptor of the parietal cells in the stomach & reduce gastric acid secretion.
Indication: To treat gastric ulcers, duodenal ulcers, relieve heartburn, acid indigestion & sour stomach.
Common drugs: Famotidine & Ranitidine.
