Concept-based instruction & the IB pedagogy-mind-map by Sunita Jagtiani
Synergistic thinking a product of the use of facts in tandem with concepts and generalizations.
Synergistic thinking - getting the best of conceptual and factual thinking by intentionally designing a curriculum with blend of concepts and facts.
Idea-centred = identifying key and related concepts to frame critical subject area content with a central idea. This idea-centred curriculum will allow deeper conceptual thinking and understanding in the IB DP programmes
The process allows the students to build their personal knowledge (constructivist learning) - personal engagement as they inquire (inquiry learning) to consider connections between related concepts and the key concepts.
Moreover, the overall process reduces the reliance on memorization. Students have made connections in their brains entailing into deeper thinking and understanding at a conceptual level bringing in the required breadth and depth.
Students process discipline-specific related concepts, generalizations and principles through a conceptual lens, connecting to prior knowledge, forming a conceptual framework; thereby facilitating deeper understanding, thinking at a conceptual level and conceptual transfer.
IB PYP, MYP and DP programmes are three-dimensional and concept-based curriculums. They use key concepts that transcend disciplines. These key concepts drive the unit.
Transfer of knowledge - organizing information into a conceptual framework allows for greater transfer of knowledge
Key concepts and disciplinary related concepts are used to make explicit important conceptual relationships (central ideas) that guide instruction allowing students to process factual information through conceptual level thinking.
Challenges
Curriculum development that can be achieved through the making of unit planners.
Teacher training so that they understand concept-based learning. Shift in pedagogy to concept based teaching and learning.
Creating assessments that assess conceptual understanding and thinking.
Benefits
Thinking
Faciilitates synergistic thinking, deeper intellectual thinking, creates connections and knowledge patterns, facilitates transfer of knowledge at a conceptual level, allows reflection and meta-cognition
Intercultural understanding
Develops intercultural understanding and international-mindedness through conceptual transfer.
Provides motivation for learning
Students think about facts through relevant personally engaging key concepts, thereby increasing motivation. Teaches how to learn and respect understanding from others. Encourages constructivist learning experiences. Values collaboration and problem-solving.
Social construction of knowledge - students working in groups where different minds working together scaffold each other and generate new ideas and solutions.
