Hyperchloremia is usually caused by an underlying disorder, like diabetes, an eating disorder, or liver cirrhosis

Having a balanced diet without extreme restrictions can prevent hyperchloremia caused by malnutrition

If the hyperchloremia was caused by a medication, talk to your doctor about managing side effects, such as increasing consumption of fluids and reduced sodium and/or chloride in your diet
If you are undergoing chemotherapy, you are at an increased risk of developing hyperchloremia due to potential kidney damage
