overall net migration has been increasing. until the mid-1980s net migration was negative but now it is positive and has steadily increased until the 2000s when it began to drop. the highest levels of migration was in 2000s with about overall 200,000 immigrants. emigration has remained relatively constant between 1970 and 2012, however immigration, while steady until 1995 has rapidly increased from about 300,000 in to 2000 to 500,000 in 2011. since 1990s UK has attracted more immigrants than emigrants have left. the countries of migration change too - in the 19th century, millions from the UK emigrated to the USA and countries in the British empire. in 2014, most immigrants came from India and China, and most emigrants left to Australia and France
