"The nature of observation"
Processes that are a part of initial
observations
Identifying characteristics of individual
children
In this process child's interests, needs are observed by observant
Describing how the group functions
Student-teacher should also observe children's getting on well with each other as well as she/he should try to avoid from negotiations and conflicts.
Finding general characteristics of children
In this process pre-service teacher finds similar characters of all children. as you know their chracters are different, but most of them are vocal that express their ideas while others are quiet
Assessing how the children respond to you
Pre-service teacher should also pay attention of child's respond to her/himself because not all child respond you positively. From that point pre-service teacher should be ready to negative responds too
Considering new information in the light of
specialized knowledge
Student-teachers should read a lot of articles, new informations and books to be familiar with everything related to their job because knowing some aspects is not enough
Having a purpose for your observations
This process should be first, because you should know your aim to observe children. Before planning you should know your aim and then plan everything
What can be observed when getting
to know children?
Areas of development
Pre-service teacher should find out strategies to develop child. If student- teacher knew about social and emotional developments it will be easy to develop other skills in a meaningful way.
The children’s knowledge
Children have the knowledge according to their understandings and concepts. One pre-service teacher while observing children heard two girls' conversation that if you didn't have long hair boys wouldn't love you. in there teacher stopped them and explain that it is not related to length of hair but related to kindness and good behavior. Then Alice came and said that she had done many unkind thing but her father loved her and asked the reason. Then teacher explained that whatever we do our parents always love us, but not others. If somebody is unkind he or she will pass away alone and sad. In that situation child trying to connect her and new information from asking her teacher. We may find out that Alica's understanding and concepts something on the way constructing by testing ideas
Skills and strategies used in learning
and interacting
Talking about skills and strategies, it is not teacher's strategies but child's skills and strategies used in learning. Whikle observing them pre-service teacher should connet their knowledge with other information that you knew while observing them. For instamce, from other student-teachers' observation, a boy Jack always tend to ask from his friend what to do in math. Whan teacher asked to change his sit he was reluctant and even continued asking. Asking something is good but he need to do it himself. if he does it himself he will build his self-esteem and confidence
Children’s dispositions
Dispositions are some behaviours that used to make friends and to learn someting. Generally we may say cooperativeness and argues are dispositions of children. From observing child's dispositions teacher may catch child's interest to learn something or to express their ideas without fear
The dynamics of a group of children
As I mentioned before, children have different characters as well as as a future teacher you should observe each child individually. After that you can know leaders and passive participants among them. Dominant participants also called dynamics of the group and they will be very active. If you can separate them you will be able to plan teaching strategies more effectively
Children’s feelings
In this point you should feel child's feelings as well as looking at the situation not from adult's perspective, but understanding child's position. For exaample, student teacher Viki experienced that one morning tea Anna wet herself and she wore dry cloth over wet. Then Viki ordered to her to take off her wet clothes. But when Viki went to see what happened Anna couldn't undo her button and felt guilty. From this example, future teachers should know looking to situations from child's point of view
