Prochaska's Six stage model

A01

smokers behaviour changed during the time they were trying to quit - in a cyclical process not single

Client would progress through the stages but also skip some stages or go back to one

Precontemplation - do not think about change (denial)

Contemplation - you are aware of the change you want in the future but also aware of the costs

Preparation - benefits outweigh the costs and the change will be coming just unsure of when

Action - When you have started to do something in the last months such as CBT

Intervention - see a support counsellor who helps construct a plan

Intervention - seeing the pros of overcoming the addiction

Maintenance - change has been sustained for 6 months or more

A03

✅ - Realistic view of addiction - allows flexibility and enables clients to skip or go back to certain stages

❌ - Taylor - suggests this type of approach is not as effective - West "problems with the models are serious and should be discarded"

✅ Velicer - meta-analysis - 22-26% success rate with smoking

✅ - NO demographic issues such as; age, gender or IQ.

MOREOVER ✅ - URICA - practical application - allowing interventions to be administered

Face Validity - recognition of its complexity ✅

❌ - differences between stages are based on random choices eg "you plan to stop smoking for 30 days but preparation is at 31 days"

❌ - Other researchers suggested that only 2 stages were necessary - Precontemplation and all the other stages combined together

Intervention - develop coping strategies

Intervention - develop relapse prevention strategies
