Antidiarrheal drugs
1) Opioids
Loperamide/ Codeine phosphate
-Indication: control and relieve the symptoms of acute diarrhea
-Dosage: 4-8mg daily in divided doses
-Contraindication: ulcerative colitis, bloody stools
-Side Effects: constipation, abdominal distension, abdominal pain
2) Absorbents
Bismuth subsalicylate
-Indication: used to treat diarrhea
-Dosage: 8 doses in a day
-Contraindication: bleeding problems, stomach ulcer
-Side Effects: constipation, dark colored stools
Attapulgite
-Indication: used for management of diarrhea
-Dosage: 1.2g to 1.5g per dose
-Contraindication: hypersensitivity, bowel obstruction
-Side Effects: bloating, flatulence, stomach upset, nausea

Antacids Peptic Ulcer
Systemic Effect
Sodium Bicarbonate
-Indication: reduce stomach acid
-Dosage: 1-5g 4-6 hourly as needed
-Contraindication: metabolic or respiratory alkalosis
-Side Effects: frequent urge to urination, headache, loss of appetite
Calcium Carbonate
-Indication: used to neutralizes esophageal acid and prevent form reflux
-Dosage: 8g daily for up to 2 weeks
-Contraindication: hypercalcemia, malignant bone disease
-Side Effects: constipation, bloating, gas
Non Systemic Effect
Magnesium Trisilicate and Magnesium Phosphate
-Indication: relieves the pain and discomfort of indigestion and heartburn
-Dosage: 10-20ml tds daily between meals
-Contraindication: severe renal failure, congestive heart failure
-Side Effects: constipation, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps
