CANINE WOBBLERS - Coggle Diagram
CANINE WOBBLERS
CLINICAL PRESENTATION
may be acute and progress slowly
seen as subtle ataxia of all limbs
swaying and an elongated stride in His
gait changes
low head carriage
neck stiffness
if servere: may have paresis/ paralysis
if has nerve root compression- thoracic limb lameness will be present
CONSERVATIVE TREATMENT
only for mild signs
cage rest
controlled exercise in harness not collar
increases the load of the HL, gait re-education, reduces momentum, load in a less concussive gait, increase load, increase pro/ retraction, increased flexion, increase muscular effort
NSAIS/ steroids
weight shifting
improves the confidence in loading limbs, aids proprioception, stimulates spinal stabilisers, improves core muscle strength, causes isometric contractions
PROM
early mobilisation of the limbs, challenges periarticular tissue, decreases pain, increases circulation and synovial fluid
POST OP PHYSIO
ice pack
PROM
early mobilisation of the limbs, challenges periarticular tissue, decreases pain, increases circulation and synovial fluid
massage
stretching
tactile stimulation
increases proprioception, encourages limb activity flexion and extension
weight shifting
improves the confidence in loading limbs, aids proprioception, stimulates spinal stabilisers, improves core muscle strength, causes isometric contractions
SURGICAL TREATMENT
non-abultory/ chronic conditions
vertebral decompression surgery
drill under the beck and hold the vertebrae apart and stabilise the vertebrae
distraction and fusion of verebrae
PATHOLOGY
abnormal development of cervical vertebrae causing compression on the spinal cord
prevalence in dobermans, pinchers and giant breeds
