21.9 pH
pH = -log[H+]
-
Acids have a pH value lower than 7 and bases have a pH value of higher than 7. Then when a substance has a pH value of 7 that means it is neutral
-
Ex. In pure water or a neutral solution [H+] is 1.0 × 10-7 M. so to find the pH value: pH = -log[1.0 × 10-7] = -(-7.00) = 7.00
When rounding sig figs the amount of significant figures in the original number is equal to the amount of decimal places in the answer
- What is one value of using pH instead of molar concentrations? It is easier to use and you can tell if the substance is a base, acid, or neutral with pH
- Is coffee and acidic or a basic substance? Coffee is an acidic substance because it has a pH of 5 and anything with a pH below 7 is acidic
- If a material has a pH of 9.3, is it acidic or basic? The material is basic because anything with a pH above 7 is basic
