Grade 8 - Science Respiratory System Connections Notes
Nervous System: Control
Brain
Brainstem initiates breathing
Signal to thoracic cavity for ventilation.
Digestive System : Iron Intake
Iron rich Food is consumed
Broken down into important parts
iron
bone marrow
Red blood cells
Skeletal System : RBC Creation
Bones
RBCs made in bone marrow cavities
2.5 million RBC created per second
Cardiovascular / Circulatory System : Transportation
Red Blood Cells
20 trillion red blood cells
Each red blood cell carries 270 million oxygen binding molecules using hemoglobin
Hemoglobin
Size: 7-8 micrometers in order to be able to pass through the capillaries.
Hemoglobin is used to bind oxygen to the cell. Less of this means drastic drop in 270 million oxygen due to lesser efficiency in cells. Can lead to anemia, can be battled with taking more iron.
More of hemoglobin leads to thicker blood cells, can form blood clots, as they can't pass through capillaries, and can lead to heart attacks.
Carries O2 rich RBC to individual cells
Whole bodies blood vessels can wrap around the world
Heart
Pumps 100,000 times a day
Muscular System
Respiration
Aerobic: With Oxygen
Nose
Lungs
Alveoli
Red Blood Cells
ATP
Cells
Structure
Miniature and balloon like.
Hundreds of millions
Alveoli walls: Thin, flat cells
1 cell thick, thinnest possible
Surrounded by capillaries.
You breathe 17000 times a day
Anaerobic
Without oxygen
Urinary System: Filtration
Kidneys
Regulate level of RBC
Healthy Blood
