Brown V. Board of Education (July 24, 1954) a girl was forced to go on an hour long bus ride to go to the black school so her dad took it to court. the final decision was that public schools cannot be segregated. many school stayed segregated any way.
Murder of Emmett till (Agust 28, 1955) a boy named emit till went down to Mississippi from chicago. in Mississippi emit flirted with a white girl. her father and brother beat and brutally killed emit.
Rosa parks (December 1, 1955) she refused to give up her seat to a white man on the bus. she was arrested for this started the bus boycott.
Southern Christian leadership conference & MLK (January 1957) black pastors and MLK meet to set up nonviolent protests.
Little rock nine (September 1957) nine black students try to integrate into the white school are stopped by protest esters. then the president sent in paratroopers to protect the kids and at the end of the year the school graduated its first black kid.
Greensboro sit-ins (February 1960) the Greensboro sit-ins where a number of sit-ins at white only counters in restaurants. the protesters where beaten and arrested for sitting. the sit-ins caused the state govenor to make segregation in restaurants illegal
Freedom riders (May 1961)group of black kids who rode on buses and stooped at bus terminals using the white-only areas. the protest was marked by horrific violence against the protestors.
March on Washington ( august 1963) a protest of about 250,000 people is lead on Washington to end segregation and get jobs. it was lead by MLK and is where the famous i have a dream speech comes from.
Freedom Summer (June 1964) freedom summer was a plan to get as many black voters registered as possible. the goal was that if blacks can vote then they will have more power.

Plessy V. Ferguson (May 1896) the supreme court ruled that segregation was legal as long as the facilities were equal. this made it so everything could be separated due to race. most of the facilities were not equal.
