mass media, Singapore: media allows certain leeway in its criticism of…
mass media
functions
source of income for ppl
-
authors, TV/movie producers, editors, bloggers/vloggers
education
-
-
rather than just dispensing information, media should assist them in understanding and comprehending what it is they're hearing and watching
eg. National Geographic, TIME magazine, The Economist
spread information
eg. during crisis such as a Tsunami, ppl would take immediate action
-
-
shaping social norms
gender & body image
eg. 2004 Dove Campaign for Real Beauty launched to celebrate the natural physical variation embodied by all women + inspire them to have confidence
- various advertisements that included stereotypes of body shaming / photoshop
2012 female protagonist of Brave = more realistic body shame + independent + goes against her prescribed gender role
-ve: media's embodiment and prevalent use of modern perception of beauty = create unrealistic pressures on females to conform to lofty expectations
race
-
eg. SG local production "Police and Thief" = scenes of ppl of different races having good interaction + social cohesion
-ve: content from media might reinforce certain biases that reside in subconscious = develop unfavourable assessments of ppl
eg. 2016, Media Tenor Research claimed that 80% of press coverage representing Islam and Muslim is -ve
-
-
expectations
bc of its extensive reach, ppl expect media to disseminate accurate and a truthful portrayal of information
corporations involved in news distribution are compelled to remain accurate and truthful as their sales are largely contingent on the accuracy of their reports
expect information to be comprehensive in its reporting, there should be sufficient range and depth of issues reported so as to provide additional knowledge and insight to the readers
-
eg. the killing of George Floyd in 2020 led to the spread of #BLackLivesMatter hashtag on social media further inspired thousands of people around the globe to speak up against racism
-
censorship
-
-
-
-
-
self-defeating
censorship only serves to heighten curiosity + as an impetus for ppl to circumvent said measures that are put in place to look for alternate sources of info
eg. documentary on SG's political exiles 'To SG with love' was banned locally in 2014 bc it was said to undermine national security
=> but SGreans just flocked to Malaysia to watch it (did not deter them from watching the banned movie)
rise of social media
-
-
citizen journalism
social media gives citizens and amateurs the opportunity to embrace their creative geniuses through content production rather than just passively receiving info
provides ppl with a platform for ppl to respond to govt policies and actor => organise ppl should the need arise
empower citizens: gives silent individuals a platform to voice their opinions + encourages constructive debates
-
(-ve) however, govt do not always respond to comments as there is a tendency for them to take up paternalistic position
eg. to manage the spread of fake news and falsehood online, SG passed 'Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act' POFMA = online platforms have to correct false news (offenders pay $1k)
-ve: many victims of online vigilante have not been able to find normalcy in their lives in the LR
- live with the stigma of their misdeed for long time
- privacy dug up + shamed
eg. Amy Cheong, racist towards Malay void deck wedding -> fled to Aus in shame
-
-
-
-
celebrity influence
often seen leading glitzy and glamorous lives filled with fame, money, popularity and attention BUT often subjected to a loss of privacy + personal info
watched by public constantly, have to be mindful of every action they make
freedom largely restricted as they are constantly plagued by speculation and gossip + negative effects from haters
eg. Michelle Obama wore shorts at Grand Canyon, critics criticized her choice of clothing
suffer from constant scrutiny by the public who often hold them to stringent, unrealistic standards
weight-obsessed culture deems it natural for celebrities to embody a 'perfect' body = girls have hour glass figure, men have broad chest & strong muscles
but such expectations are unreasonable as celebrities are ppl too, should not expect everyone to be able to live up to these standards
-
FORTUNATELY there are celebrities that frequently challenge societal standards
- champion 'imperfect' body types
eg. supermodel Tyra Banks is constantly trying to get the fashion industry to recognise and acknowledge the beauty of 'fiercely real' models
mistakes are often magnified, public remain unforgiving of a celebrity that has fallen from fame, public become unrelenting
more influential than regular people + generate greater awareness of problems much more effectively due to popularity
eg. actress Alyssa Milano popularised the use of #MeToo as a rallying call for survivors of sexual abuse
- empower many survivors to share their stories & raise awareness of SA
trustworthy?
unreliable
profit driven nature of media = unreliable in upholding social responsibility and providing truthful information
-
-
-
-
-
-
eg. The Danish newspaper commissioned and printed cartoon portraying the Prophet Muhammed in a bad light = growing hostility between Denmark's immigrants and locals = caused protests and social unrest
-
-
-
-
-
Singapore: media allows certain leeway in its criticism of govt so long as its not deeply detrimental to the standing of the govt
=> done to appease the intelligence of its increasingly educated populace
"Whoever controls the media, controls the mind" -Jim Morrisson
govt controlled media (Singapore)
- (SG, 2015) ST covered displeasure felt by many netizens after then Minister of State of Manpower Teo Ser Luck aired a fb post with a photo of himself trying a worker's bed in dormitory = insensitive move + coverage showed a human side to ruling party's politicians
- ST exudes impartially by covering views of opposition party MOP, esp those on more pressing issues like elected presidency, immigration policies, GST hike
new media vs traditional media
- new media is more empowering, convenient, faster, greater reach/accessibility, engaging
- there are cons if under wrong hands (falsehoods)
- both are complements of each other
