Definition
This is a diabetic complication that is characterised by capillary basement membrane thickening
Clinical manifestations
Retinopathy
Cataract
Glaucoma
Blindness
Kidney or renal disease
Pain at rest
Oedema
Pathophysiology
This result from changes that are unique to diabetes in small blood vessels and occur in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes
The basement membrane of the capillaries thickens due to the accumulation of sugers, which impairs the exchange of nutrients, gases and wastes
Tissues that are most vulnerable to macrovascular complications are the eye and the kidneys
Nursing care plan
Nursing diagnosis
At risk for variation of blood glucose levels from the normal ranges that may compromise health
Inadequate amount of blood pumped by heart to meet demands of the body
Nursing intervention
Give medication as prescribed by the medical officer
Monitor and documentation any adverse effects or response to medications
Monitor vital signs and blood glucose levels
Assess signs of hyperglycemia
Assessment of feet temperature, pulses color and sensationa
Evaluation
Blood glucose levels should be within the normal range
