Reading round the class (different students reading short sections one after the other)- is an ineffective technique, because:
- "it's so boring,
- "he can't pronounce it and he gets embarrassed",
- 'I prefer to read to myself"...etc
Some alternatives:
- you read,
- you read narrative students the dialogue,
- students read to each other in small group
Extensive reading activities:
- jump in the middle and read 1 page, try to predict what could happened etc,
- use key section as a dictation,
- allow students to improvise a different situation,
- students draw a picture of a scene
- make interviews about the reading material,
- map the story/one chapter,
- keep a character's diary,
- review the book,
- planning a movie from the book, discussing it,
- blank out some words of a chapter/paragraph,
- redesign the cover of the book.
