Differentiated Instruction, HOW I WILL APPLY DIFFERENTIATION IN MY…
Differentiated Instruction
Learning can individualize but done in small or large groups
adjust or plan lessons to address the various needs and skills of students
provide variety of ways to teach and assess
what is being learned?
How is it being learned?
What is the outcome?
recognize students' strengths and weaknesses
Consider the students' readiness, interests and learner profiles
Differentiated instruction providing multiple approaches to content, process and product (Tomlinson, 2001).
ongoing collaboration with students is key to review and refine learning opportunities so they are effective for each student (Tomlinson, 2001).
Involve in Gardner's multiple intelligence
Gardner: "Once we realize that people have very different kinds of minds, different kinds of minds, different kinds of strengths...then education which treats everyone the same way is absolutely the most unfair education because it picks out one kind of mind" (Purefoy, 2009)
teaching the same material to all students in different ways
Gardner: "Everything can be taught in more than one way and anything that's understood can be shown in more than one way" (Purefoy, 2009)
4 Quadrants of the 4MAT Cycle (Aboutleaming4MAT,2010).
Bernice McCarthy: "While all learners engage in all types of learning, most seem to favor one particular type, and many of us have two types that we favor" (Aboutleaming4MAT,2010)
each student utilizes a different learning style, one that allows for the highest level of personal learning
Know when to work with students in a small setting, in groups or one to one
when working in groups, groupings should change over time, to allow all students to work with each other (Tomlinson, 2001).
Sometimes, group by level, sometimes by interests
learning tasks are the same, just involve different ways of getting to a final outcome
Thus, understand that all students can learn, just not in the same way
"Differentiation is a philosophy of teaching rooted in deep respect for students, acknowledgement of their differences, and the drive to help all students thrive" (Smale-Jacanose, 2019, p.1 as cited by Callum 2020)
"You can really learn a lot from your students if you actually listen to what they have to say. You can pull in on their personal experiences"(Catron as cited by Flores, 2012)
lesson plans should be "student-centered, engaging, relevant, interesting" (Tomlinson, 2001).
There is no one right way to differentiate. Teachers are constantly challenged to find new and interesting ways to teach and reach a variety if learners.
