Hypopitui
tarism
Abonomally short stature due to decreased functioning of the anterior pituitary gland, especially the secretion of growth hormone.
The height of the person is less than the third percentile and growth velocity is less than 4cm per year.
Causes
-
-
-
Unknown causes but related to pituitary tumors, low or decreased growth hormone secretion
-
Pathophysiology
The pituitary gland is unable to respond adequately to the reduction in the target hormone levels. As a result, the action of the target glands continues to remain low this eventually leads to a deficiency in the hormones produced by target glands, and a reduction in their physiologic function. The end results is a failure of some body process
Diet therapy
Eat food rich in minerals like wheat, leafy green, nuts and legumes
Iron and iodine are also important nutrients
Nutrients good for pituitary gland functioning are manganese, magnesium and vitamin E
Nursing care plan
Nursing diagnosis
- Disturbed body image related to changes in the body structure due to deficiency of gonatrophin and growth hormone
- anxiety due to the chronicity of the disease condition
- decreased self esteem due to body structure
- disturbed sensory perception due to impaired transmission of impulse as a result of suppression of tumor of optic nerve
- self cate deficit related to the decrease in muscle strength
- risk for impaired skin integrity related to declining hormonal levels
Nursing interventions
- monitor vital signs every 2 hourly
- assess lung and heart sound for signs and symptoms of congestive heart disease
- assess for chest pains and dyspnea because can complicate to chronic arteriosclerosis
- administer human growth hormone as prescribed
- instruct patient to avoid constipation and provide stool softener
- monitor fluid intake and output to insure balance due to hormone regulations
- provide emotional and psychological care so that the patient will feel comfortable
- observe eyelid, nail beds, and skin pallor for anemia
Expected outcomes
- patient understand the condition and all the information the patient needs
- patient regain self esteem
- fluid intake and output is balanced
Patient skin integrity back to normal not dry bt moist and warm
- no anemia signs and symptoms
