Special Education Referral Process at a private high school

1) Recognition
Educators should look for signs in the classroom
These possible signs may be:
- disruptive behavior
- distracting others
- unable to complete tasks
- sleeping
- not retaining information
- anxiety over coming to school
- can't understand social rules
- always sleeping in class
- isolating themselves from the group
Identify what kind of Intellectual Disability there is
- Conceptual -> This may be related to languages, reading, writing, math, reasoning, knowledge, memory
- Social -> empathy, making friends, communication skills
- Independence -> managing money, organizing school tasks, responsibilities, homework
Choose a diagnostic assessment such as:
1. Screener- Gives brief information about students to see who has low scores compared to grade-level benchmarks.
- Classroom observation- Teach observes the student's behaviors and efforts in the classroom.
- Qualitative Data- Teacher uses information about skills and performance on assignments/tasks given by the teacher.
- Diagnostic Test-This will give detailed information about student's skills in a specific area.
- Progress Measure- Weekly or monthly scores on assessments of student learning over a period of time. (can be done after step two, differentiation)
