Darwins Theory
-
In 1859 Charles Darwin brough the idea of natural selection to the attention of the world in his book

-
Reproduction
-
-
Traits that are passed on to offspring because they contribute to success are "selected for continuation"
-
-
-
Evolution
Evolution is the change in inherited characteristics or traits in a population of organisms over many generations
-
Survival of the Fittest
Conditions in the environment result in the survival of individuals with specific traits which are passed through hereditary to the next generation
-
-
Characteristics developed through environmental influences will not be passed on to future generations

Example
Lamrack
Lamrack proposed organic evolution as the explination for the physical similarities among groups of organisms
Girrafes
Lamrack theorised that the necks of girrafes became long as a result of constantly stretching but he was incorrect
The correct theory
Girrafes with longer necks were able to reach the leaves on the tree. Girrafes with shorter necks couldn't and died leaving the majority of the population with long necks. The girrafes with long necks reproduced and passed on the length of their necks to their offspring allowing them to adapt to the habitat
his inccrrect discovery made it clear that naturalists were thinking about the possibility of evolutionary change in the early 1800s
