“…the social enactment of sex roles..." (Halberstam, 117)
Breaks away from the typical gender norms
“... mode of oppression that sorts human bodies into binary categories in order to assign labor, responsibilities, moral attributes and emotional styles.” (Halberstam, 118)
My concept map is an overview of how I observe the social construct of gender. I have always thought that gender was a way to control people from fully expressing themselves and breaking away from the societal constraints that have developed around this word. I used the quote "...the social enactment of sex roles..." (Halberstam, 117), in my map because I think it shows people how much the beliefs of one have influenced the ideas of all. Gender was a term to initially represent only males and females without taking into consideration that gender itself can be on a spectrum. It characterized sex roles for men and women to make sure that social restrictions like the ideology of "machismo" and "marianismo" continue. However, with advancements in the sciences people today better understand gender. It is a spectrum for people. Gender identities do not represent an individual, but it is how that individual represents and expresses themself. People may be born with a set of pronouns, however, over time we have learned that there are more than just two. In addition, these labels do not define the person and it is ultimately up to them. At the end of the day the only person who can tell others who they are is the person itself and that only can come when that person truly understands themself.
