Global Governance (2.2.1) - Globalisation and the shrinking world
Globalisation = greater interconnectedness between nations and people
Causes:
Tech drivers:
Improvements to travel e.g affordable commercial air travel
Internet
Mobile devices
Political drivers:
Neo-liberal trading (dereged market)
Creation of supra-national institutions
Market drivers:
Domestic market = too saturated & opps for growth = limited - comps move abroad
Competitive drivers:
Supply and Demand - demand may be higher in other countries, therefore supply is moved
Global market + competition forces force comps to go global
Public attitude towards globalisation:
Some nations who experience high levels of interconnectedness express high levels of discontent for migration but highly rate economic globalisation e.g UK, US, France
Nations who have seemingly been exploited by globalisation rate it highly e.g Vietnam, Thailand
Glocalisation: Products and services are distributed globally but are adapted to meet local needs
Effects of globalisation:
Language loss
Some languages become more desirable due to globalisation e.g English, Mandarin...
The homogenisation of language - dominant language serve as tool to remove unique cultural identity
Contribution to climate change
Due to increase in commercial and cargo travel
Time-Space Convergence:
World getting smaller
Appear to live in shrinking world, despite same geographical location
IT & micro financial flows:
Mobile, personal banking system M-Pesa spread throughout Africa & India
10m access bank accounts using phones
Rural areas - farmers use mobiles to track market prices before selling
Electronic remittances:
IT plays growing role in supporting global flows of migration
Somali migrants in Uk send $100m back to Somalia through bank transfers each yr
Tech helps families stay in touch through zoom, facetime
Types of Globalisation:
Economic:
Increasing trade between countries - helped by WTO, WB, IMF - everyone involved
Growth of MNCs (helped by global advertising, enabled by mass media)
Social/ Cultural:
Spread of culture through social media - often called 'westernisation' or 'americanisation' - K-pop & Bollywood to the contrary
Political:
Free trade agenda held by WB,WTO,IMF - SDGs
Greater political unity through UN - Paris Climate Agreement
Increase in trade blocs e.g EU, NAFTA, African Union
Increased foreign aid budgets - 0.7% target from UN
Global Commons: outer space, atmosphere, high seas, Antarctica
Tech
Social media/ internet connectivity
ISS (Japan, Russia, Europe, US, Canada)
Air travel
De-globalisation: signs of decrease in economic/ political integration
