Inheritance Patterns
Sex Linkage
-
-
Phenotypic expression of an allele that is dependent on the gender of the individual and is directly tied to the sex chromosomes
-
Autosomal
Gene in question is located on one of the numbered, or non-sex, chromosomes.
Males and females are affected in roughly equal proportions. People in more than one generation are affected. Men and women are both able to pass on the condition to their sons and daughters.
-
"Dominant" means that a single copy of the disease-associated mutation is enough to cause the diorder.
'Recessive" means that two mutated genes, one from each parent is enough to cause the disorder..
-
Multiple Alleles
involves more than just the typical two alleles that usually code for a certain characteristic in a species.
-
Incomplete Dominance
Both alleles of a gene at a locus are partially expressed, often resulting in an intermediate or different phenotype.
Example
The allele for red flowers is incompletely dominant over the allele for white flowers. Red + white = pink.
