This disease is limited to the mucosal surface. It typically will begin in the rectum and will radiate up into the colon, sometimes overtaking the entire colon
This disease follows a specific pattern of remission and exacerbation, meaning that sometimes there will be flare-ups where the symptoms are very bad, and other times where the symptoms may go unnoticed

While they are much lesser risk factors, health and lifestyle habits can be predisposing factors. Having a sendentary lifestyle and smoking have a negative effect on health, and thus, the GI tract. Also eating high amounts of polyunsaturated fats may be linked to ulcerative colitis
Diagnostics

Other types of tests can help rule out complications or other forms of inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn's disease
