Darlington Hall, summer 1956. Mr Farraday, the new American owner, succeeds Lord Darlington, who had acted in favour of Germany during the war and found himself in disgrace. Farraday tries to establish a friendlier relationship with his butler, Stevens, and suggests he should take some days off.
