Respiratory System
Karina Quinones, Period 6
Major Functions
- supply the body with O2 for cellular respiration and dispose of CO2 (a waste product of cellular respiration)
- also functions in olfaction and speech
-
-
-
Layers of the Pleurae
-
-
Pleurae: thin, double layered serosal membrane, Divides thoracic cavity into 2 pleural compartments and mediastinum
Pleural Fluid: fills pleural cavity between two pleurae, functions to provide lubrication and surface tension that allow for expansion and recoil of lungs
-
-
Respiratory Volumes and Capacities: can be used to assess respiratory status. a spirometer is a tool used to measure respiratory volumes. can determine health of a person. volumes can be used to calculate capacities
-
Respiratory Volumes
Inspiratory Reserve Volume (IRV): amount of air that can be inspired forcibly beyond the tidal volume (avg 2100-3200ml)
Expiratory Reserve Volume (ERV): amount of air that can be forcibly expelled from lungs (1000-2100 ml)
-
Residual Volume (RV): amount of air that always remains in lungs that is needed to keep alveoli open
