Human reproductive system
Male reproductive system
Ducts
Vas Deference (sperm Duct)
Narrow tubular structure connected at the end of each epididymis
Function: Carry the sperms from the epididymis to the Urethra.
Urethra
From the end of the urinary bladder to the end of the penis.
Function: Carries urine from the urinary bladder and sperm from Vas deference to outside the body.
Epididymis
Location: Lies against each testicle in the scrotum, like a cap
Structure: Highly coiled structure, enclosed in a fibrous covering
Function: Sperms mature in the epididymis and move to
the sperm duct
Accessory Glands
Seminal Vesicle
Location and structure: Pair of sac-like glands that opens into the sperm ducts before it joins the urethra.
Produce: Secrete the seminal fluid that provides nourishment to sperm to remain motile
Prostate gland
Small walnut-size gland located below the Urinary Bladder at the base of the urethra.
Function: secretes alkaline fluid to nourish, protect the sperm and help them to swim
Penis
Location: External organ of a male reproductive system at the lower end of the abdomen
Function: Transfers the semen to the female reproductive system
Cowper’s gland
Location: Small pea sized glands that occur in pairs next to the prostate gland on either side of the urethra
Function: white viscous alkaline secretion that acts as a lubricant for the penis.
Main Organ
Testes
Location: Sac-like structure in the scrotum. Just outside the abdominal cavity
(slightly lower temperature than the body, necessary for the production of sperms)
Function: Testes produce male gametes –sperm inside
Seminiferous tubulesSertoli cells- Nourish and maintain the shape of the sperms
Female reproductive system
Ducts
Fallopian Tube
Two oviducts extend from each ovary to the uterus
Function: To capture the ovum released by the ovary Site for fertilisation Pushes the egg /zygote towards the uterus
Vagina: Short narrow muscular tube that connects the uterus to the outside function- Passage for entry of the sperms, forms the birth canal
Accessory
Uterus
Hollow pear-shaped organ Present in between the urinary bladder and rectum
Function: it supports and facilitates the development of the embryo
Main Organ
OVARY
Small, Oval shaped
Location: Inside the abdominal cavity, on each side of the Uterus Function: Ovulation
Release of mature ovum
Secretion of- Oestrogen, Progesterone
