Assessment Chapter 6
Assessment Involves:
- Planning what, how, and when to assess, with attention to the varied purposes of different constituents or stakeholders, including students, parents, teachers, local, and state administrators.
- Collecting appropriate data from a variety of sources, ranging from informal observations of students in class to more formal scoring of students performances on specific tasks using common rubrics
- Analyzing student performance data, looking for strengths to build on, and identifying areas in need of further instruction and assistance
- reporting student strengths and needs in ways that are beneficial to students, teachers, and the school
- using student performance data to identify what a student must learn in order to progress to the next level

Assessment AS learning: students regularly self reflect on their academic progress and language development and plan their future learning
Assessment FOR learning: teacher plan and use evidence from classroom based assessments to modify their instruction and provide students descriptive and detailed feedback on their learning
Assessment OF learning: school leaders use assessment data from standardized tests to report on students' progress in their language and academic achievement
Dynamic Assessment: emphasizes that teaching and learning are "an inherent part of all assessment regardless of purpose or context"
