- - - - nose - functions: has hairs to block out particles (filtration), is an opening for air to enter the body, structure: made of lots of bone and cartilage, also has coarse hairs
      - nasal cavity - function: supports mucous membranes, increases surface area to warm, moisturize, and filter incoming air, structure: hollow space posterior to nose, divided by a nasal septum (cartilage and bone) and nasal conchae support nose and divide up nasal cavity
      - paranasal sinuses functions: reduces weight of skull and serves as resonant chambers for your voice, structure: air filled spaces in maxillary, frontal, and ethmoidal bones
      - pharynx- functions: prevents food from entering airway, helps make sounds for speech, structure: consists of three subdivisions, **nasopharynx, oropharynx, laryngopharynx, is a space behind oral and nasal cavities
  - - - larynx -function: transports air in and out of the trachea, prevents particles from entering trachea, houses vocal cords, structure: an enlargement in the airway superior to the trachea and inferior to the laryngopharynx, is composed of a framework of muscles and cartilage bound by elastic tissue.
      - glottis and epiglottis glottis = true vocal cords, opening is between them, when breathing the glottis opens, air through it vibrates vocal cords producing a sound, epiglottis is a flap-like opening of the glottis, normally standing upright to allow air into larynx, when swallowing the epiglottis and glottis close off to prevent entrance of food
      - trachea/windpipe functions- is an airway, you can breathe air through it, consists of a cylindrical tube extending downwards anterior to the esophagus into the thoracic cavity splitting into two branches, right and left primary bronchi. incomplete c shaped cartilaginous rings keep the airway open.
      - bronchial tree - lined tubular airways leading from the trachea to microscopic air sacs of the lungs, has primary bronchi, the first branches of the bronchial tree that branch off of the trachea both leading into a lung each, secondary bronchi are the branches that lead off of primary bronchi, which enter a lobe of lung, then the tertiary bronchi are the last, which enter a segment of a lung, bronchioles are smaller tubular organs branching off segmental bronchi, from which terminal (branch off larger bronchioles, smallest bronchioles that conduct air) and respiratory (contain alveoli to perform gas exchange) bronchioles exist, and of course you cant forget about the lungs, which are soft spongy organs
