Emma J Cervantes Respiratory System Per 6
Major functions of the respiratory system
The major function of the respiratory system is to move air into the body while removing waste gases
Upper Respiratory structures and functions
Nose and nasal cavity, the pharynx, and the larynx. These structures allow you to breathe and speak.
Lower respiratory structures and functions
Trachea, the bronchi and bronchioles, and the alveoli, which make up the lungs. These structures bring in air from the upper respiratory system, take in the oxygen, and release carbon dioxide.
Layers of the pleurae
The outer/parietal pleurae is attached to the chest wall and the inner/visceral pleurae.
Compare and contrast the mechanism of inspiration and expiration
inspiration is the process of taking air into the lungs and expiration is the process of liberating air from the lungs.
Volume and Pressure relationships in thoracic cavity
Due to expansion the lungs are forced to stretch and expand. The increase in volume would lead to a decrease in intraalveolar pressure which creates pressure that is lower than atmospheric pressure.
Respiratory volumes and capacities
Respiratory volumes are lung volumes. This refers to the amount of gas that the lungs are holding during the respiratory cycle.Lung capacities are derived from summation of different lung volumes.
Internal vs. external respiration
Internal respiration takes place in the metabolizing tissues, which the oxygen diffuses out of the blood and carbon dioxide goes out of the cells
External respiration is when the lungs diffuse oxygen into the blood and carbon dioxide is diffused into alveolar air.
Disorders of the respiratory system
The top illnesses that you can get in your respiratory system are
Asthma
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Chronic Bronchitis
Emphysema
Lung Cancer
Cystic Fibrosis/Bronchiectasis
Pneumonia.
Pleural Effusion.
