Respiratory System
Natalia Bernal-Campos Period 6
Major Functions of the Respiratory system
Upper Respiratory Structures and Functions
Nasal Cavity
nasal septum- bone and cartilage
Nasal conchea are scroll-shaped bones that divide the nasal cavity into passageways
supports the mucous membrane
increases the surface area to warm, moisturize, and filter incoming air
Particles trapped in the mucus are carried to the pharynx by action of cilia, swallowed, and carried to the stomach, where gastric juice destroys microorganisms in the mucus.
Sinuses
Nose
nostrils provide openings for entrance and exit of air
supported by bone and cartilage
nostrils contain coarse hairs, which prevent entry of particles
Pharynx
Lower Respiratory Structures and Functions
trachea
bronchial tree
larynx
lungs
Layers of the Pleurae
Parietal pleura:outer layer; lines the thoracic cavity
visceral pleura: inner layer; attached to the surface of each lung
Respiratory Volumes and Capacities
Volume and Pressure relationships in Thoracic Cavity
Compare and Contrast the Mechanism of Inspiration and Expiration
Expiration means exhalation
Inspiration means inhalation
Internal vs. External Respiration
Disorders the Respiratory Systems
