The Breathing System - Coggle Diagram
The Breathing System
Inhalation
-
- External intercostal muscles
contract + ribs up and out
- Diaphragm muscle contracts - flattens
- Volume of thorax increases
- Pressure decreases in lungs
- Air enters lungs from HIGHER pressure
in atmosphere to LOWER pressure in lungs
until pressure equilibrium is achieved
Exhalation
-
- External intercostal muscles
relax + ribs down and in
- Diaphragm muscle relaxes - domed
- Volume of thorax decreases
- Pressure increases in lungs
- Air forced out of lungs from HIGHER pressure in lungs to LOWER pressure in
atmosphere until pressure equilibrium
-
-
Respirometer
-
OXYGEN
-
-
- Oxygen consumed by living organisms will
cause reduction in pressure in respirometer
- Cause liquid/dye to move in direction of biological material
-
CARBON
DIOXIDE
-
- NO CHANGE in level of liquid -
volume CO2 produced equal volume O2 used
- Liquid moved AWAY/DOWN from organism -
more CO2 produced than O2 used
- Liquid moved TOWARDS/UP to organism -
less CO2 produced than O2 used
