Hitler Rises to Power in Germany
Hitler before WWI was a slightly known political leader who's previous career had disappointed him. When WWI began Hitler volunteered and awarded himself two Iron Cross metals for bravery.
After the war, Hitler stayed in Munich.
In 1919, he joined a small right-wing political group that had the same idea that Germany must overturn the Treaty of Versailles to stop communism.
This small political group later named themselves the National Socialist German Worker's Party or Nazi for short.
The party created a German form of fascism known as Nazism. The members of this party made the swastika or hooked cross as its symbol.
The group also created a private military called the Storm Troopers or Brown Shirts
Due to Hitler's success at organizing and speaking, this led him to be the chosen leader of the Nazi party.
Mussolini's march on Rome inspired the Nazis plan to gain power in Munich in 1923. However, the attempt failed and Hitler was sentenced to 5 years in prison for treason. Although he served less than 9 months.
While Hitler was imprisoned, he wrote a book translated to My Struggle in English. This book talked about his beliefs and goals for Germany.
When he got out of prison in 1924, he revived the Nazi party. Most Germans ignored him and his angry messages until the great depression destroyed the people's belief of postwar recovery.
