Respiratory System Jasmin Montoya p.3
Major Functions of Respiratory System
Removing waste gas from the body
Inhaling oxygen into the body
Upper structure and function
Nose
Allows air to enter body and filters for debris
Nasal Cavity
Warms and Filters fresh air
Mouth
Used as a backup when nasal cavity is not functional
Pharynx
Carries air down from the nose and mouth
Larynx
Allows for air to pass from trachea to lungs, also contains voice box
Lower Structure and Function
Bronchi
Moistens air as it comes into your lungs from the outside
Bronchioles
Grab oxygen and put them into small sacs called Alveoli
Lungs
Bring oxygen into our body and expel carbon dioxide out
Alveoli
The point where lungs and blood exchange oxygen for carbon dioxide
Trachea
Carries air in and out of your lungs
Layers of Pleurae
Outer Pleurae
Parietal Pleurae
Inner Pleurae
Visceral Pleurae
Inspiration vs Expiration compare contrast
Expiration
Expulsion of air out of the lungs
Diaphragm relaxes
Inspiration
The intake of air into the lungs
Diaphragm contracts
Volume and Pressure relationships
Atmospheric Pressure
Pressure created from the outside air surrounding the body
Intrapulmonary Pressure
Pressure in alveoli that fluctuates when breathing
Transpulmonary Pressure
Pressure that keeps the lung spaces open
Interpleural Pressure
Pressure in pleural cavity that fluctuates when breathing
Respiratory Volumes and Capcacities
Tidal Volume
Amount of air that can be inhaled or exhaled during one respiratory cycle
Inspiratory Reserve Volume
The amount of air that can be forcefully inhaled after the tidal volume is inhaled
Expiratory Reserve Volume
The volume of air that can be expelled from the body after the normal tidal volume
Residual Volume
Amount of air that is left in the lungs to keep them open at all times
Respiratory Disorders
tuberculosis
baterial infection in the respitory system
copd
chronic obstuctive pulmonary disoder
pneumonia
bacterial or vial infection of the lungs
lung cancer
uncontrolled cell growth and development of tummers in the lungs
seasonal flu
a viral infection many variation of the flu changes rapidly year to year
