eg. for a memory study ppts may be matched on their IQ. Two ppts with the first and second highest IQ scores would paired together, as would the third and forth highest.

repeated measures
-
issue: the order of these tasks may be significant. the may have the effect of the first IV to deal with when they complete with the second IV
-
order effects: could create boredom or fatigue. alternatively the ppts performance may improve in the second task because of practice effects.
issue: could work out the aim, and therefore perform to demand characteristics
participant variables are controlled, fewer ppts so less time recruiting them
-
Random allocation
An attempt to control for ppts variables in an independent group designs which ensures that each ppts has the same chance of being in one condition as any other.
counterbalancing
an attempt to control for the effects of order in a repeated measures design: half the ppt experience the conditions in one order, and the other half in the opposite order
