Industrial/Employee Relations
Employer
Collective bargaining
Somewhat likely: Begging the employees from the history faculty especially to not resign and stay in the university, as there is high staff turnover and is short staffed, with low morale.
Changes of contract
Very likely: As there are many cases about Jim that can negatively affect PU, Adriana can make changes to the contract so that it can keep Jim to perform and act properly, and also protect the employees from the faculty of history. In the case study, Adriana also mentioned that she want to make changes to the contract already.
Threat of Redundancies
Not likely: PU has already made redundancies and there is low morale among staff due to fear of further redundancies, which Adriana is trying to solve.
Closure and lock-outs
Not likely: Closure and lock-out would have an extremely large negative effect on the students, resulting in the teaching quality decreasing and causing students to have low-quality learning or not being able to learn at all. PU should give priority to the student's education first, and acquise to the staff's demands.
There are already complaints from students about the quality of online teaching as well as lower student applications to PU. As Adriana wishes for student numbers to increase, PU would want to ensure that online teaching quality is as high as possible
Employee
Strike
Somewhat likely: It can be assumed that there is a teacher union which supports the staff, and the conflict is supported by many of the staff.
Collective bargaining
Likely: The IT department is short of staff. They may beg the university to hire more staff to help with the extra burden with training different departments. for running online lectures and producing new equipments to detect contaminations
Slow downs
LIkely: History faculty may use this method to get Jim's attention, which could damage the university reputation, forcing PU to take action. The risk of employees getting fired may be low as the faculty is already low on staff with high staff turnover.
Work to rule
Not likely: Following the rule would not have a great effect on the faculty because it benefits the university.
Overtime ban
Likely: A lot of teachers take overtime to plan their lessons which means overtime ban would have a significant impact on PU. The quality of teaching would decrease and student complains would increase, forcing PU to take action in regards to fears of redundancies and Jim's actions.
Likely: The IT department is currently doing a lot of overtime due to the technical issues of online teaching, and stopping would have a large impact on all the staff, therefore creating an issue that PU would have to solve with them.
