alyssa villanueva p.7 respiratory concept map
Major functions of the respiratory system
the major functions are to remove particles form the incoming air, regulate temperature and water content in the air, provide vocal sounds, regulate blood pH and help with the sense of smell
Upper respiratory structures and functions
structures
nose, nasal cavity, sinuses and the pharynx
functions
it helps supply air and oxygen to the upper portion of the body
Lower respiratory structures and functions
structures
larynx, trachea , bronchial tree and the lungs
functions
helps supply oxygen to the lower part of the body
Layers of the pleurae
serous fluid
lubricates the pleural cavity between the 2 layers
parietal
outer layer; line the thoracic cavity
visceral
inner layer; attached to the surface of each lung
Compare and contrast the mechanism of inspiration and expiration
expiration
exhale , the diaphragm goes up and making the lungs contract making them smaller in size and not blown up
inspiration
breathing in, the diaphragm contracts and goes downward enlarging the thoracic cavity
Volume and Pressure relationships in thoracic cavity
if the volume goes up the pressure goes down / if the pressure goes up the volume goes down
Respiratory volumes and capacities
inspiratory reserve volume (irv)
volume : ~3000 mL
capacities ; erv + rv = ~2300 mL
expiatory reserve volume (erv)
volume : ~1,200 mL
capacities ; tv + irv + erv = 4600 mL
tidal volume (tv)
volume : ~500 mL
capacities ; irv + tv = ~3500 mL
residual volume (rv)
volume : ~1200 mL
capacities ; vc + rv = ~5800 mL
Internal vs. external respiration
external
gas exchange between lings and the blood
internal
the gas exchange between the blood and body cells
Disorders of the respiratory system
tuberculosis
bacteria infection in the respiratory system caused by the bacterium tuberculosis
pneumonia
bacterial/ viral infection of the lungs
COPD
chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder; includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and asthma
lung cancer
uncontrolled cell growth and development of tumors in the lungs
seasonal flu
viral infections ; there are many variations of this virus and it changes rapidly year to year which changes the severity of symptoms
