Unit 2- Using animals in research (ethics)
:star:
1.pain and distress
do animals have self-awareness and findings?
They do form lasting relationships and they do demonstrate psychological capacities.
do animals experience pain in the same way that humans do?
2.
Speciesism
There is a difference between questions about life and questions about inflicting pain.
Human behaviour is not always determined by principles of natural selection
Peter argues that discrimination of the basis of membership of a species is no different from racial or gender discrimination.
3. Rights of animals
However, having rights is dependent on having responsibilities so animals do not have any responsibilities , they do not have rights.
It may be better to distinguish between rights and obligations. Obligations are owed by humans to animals.
Regan claims that animals have a right to be treated with respect and should never be used in research.
Ethical controls
protected animals ( the act relates only to vertebrates animals and only to those more than halfway through their gestation period)
Replacement ( possible animals should be replaced with suitable alternatives).
BPS guidelines
different species should be considered to minimize pain and discomfort.
optimise research design to minimize numbers of animals used.
confinement, restraint, stress and harm (should be minimized to reduce trauma to the animal)
