Law of quantity: The amount of food must be sufficient to cover the caloric needs of the body. The foods that primarily provide calories (energy) are carbohydrates and fats. The amount of calories should be sufficient to provide heat to maintain body temperature, energy for muscle contraction, and nutritional balance. From a caloric point of view, a diet can be: sufficient, insufficient, generous or excessive. According to this law, slimming regimens are considered "insufficient", since they allow weight loss at the expense of a reduced caloric content. The caloric requirement for each particular person must be determined by a nutrition professional, considering age, sex, complexion, activity, special situations: diabetes, obesity, malnutrition, etc.
