The Carbon Cycle
Other Information
-
-
-
Ocean - Largest Carbon Sink on Earth, 50x atmosphere
-
Get decomposed and carbon is released, or stored in the soil
-
Aerates soil, Oxygen - bacteria can't grow. Adds structure to soil, improves soil health and has a large surface area
Physical Pump
-
Salty, cold water sinks due to larger density and takes in carbon
Over time, the shape of the Ocean Basin rises, changing the shape
-
-
Due to Climate Change, the ocean is warming causing releases in Carbon
Biological Pump
-
Phytoplankton are microscopic, single celled organisms
Phytoplankton lie on the surface of the water, they photosynthesise and are eaten by zooplankton
Carbon then enters the food web and when an organism dies, 30% of the carbon reaches the bottom of the ocean, the rest is recycled at the surface
-
Carbonate Pump
-
Shell Building, Calcifying organisms use Calcium Carbonate to build shells e.g. plankton
When these organisms die, their shells precipitates down to the ocean floor as marine snow
Shells on Ocean floor are compressed due to tectonic activity at high heats, turning them into rock, for example White Cliffs of Dover
