They changed from agricultural and handicraft to large manufacturing. Mechanisation was introduced and factories began to appear.

New machines, power sources, and methods of organising made existing industries more efficient and therefore more productive.
New industries such as the automobile industry started at this time.
More wealth generated and it became more widely distributed.
Many low paid workers, in poor conditions forced to work in factories now.
Gave rise to Trade Unions.
