Expansion of Military(Aaron)
March 16 1935 is when he expanded the military. The location he did it was just in Germany generally.
Britain didn't do much or more as they didn't do anything even though they knew it was a violation to the Treaty of Versailles. France got mad at Britain then for not doing anything.
Hitler expanded the military because he wanted to have a strong military to take over the world. He expanded it largely which was against the Treaty of Versailles.
Anschluss (Aaron)
It started on March 12, 1938 between Austria and Germany.
France's politics in turmoil in March of the year 1938. France was not in the position to oppose an invasion. Britain did not see the Anschluss as a threat so did nothing.
Ansluss is a political union of Austria and Germany. Basically Germany annexed Austria and made them become with them. An expansion for Germany with all of Austria. So Germany invaded Austria and took it over,
Stopped paying Reparations (Ryan)
When Adolf Hitler rose to power he cancelled all reparations. Hitler was committed to overturning the whole treaty so this was his first step. Germany saw the cancellation as a sign of courage and patriotism as they saw reparations as a humiliation.
The year the reparations were cancelled was 1933. It happened well in Germany.
France occupied the Ruhr in 1923 to enforce payments.
German military forces sent into the Rhineland. (Aaron)
March 7 1936 is when Hitler sent military forces into the Rhineland. This happened on a strip of German land that borders France, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
Hitler sent over 20,00 troops into the Rhineland. Rhineland is an area that is supposed to a demilitarized place according to the Treaty of Versailles. So, Hitler broke that.
Britain and France left Rhineland initially so then German troops occupied it. But Britain or France was in position to stop a re-militarization.
Invasion of Poland (Ryan)
The invasion of Poland happened through September 1, 1939 – October 6, 1939
After the German-Soviet Pact it allowed for Poland to be invaded without fear of the Soviet Union. To justify their invasion they said Poland was persecuting ethnic Germans and that they were planning to dismember Germany. The reason they invaded Poland is because it kept territories used to be owned by Germany.
The European response was WWII.
