Gender Bias - Coggle Diagram
Gender Bias
-
-
Beta Bias - Traditionally ignored/minimised sex differences, theories often assume that the findings from males can apply equally to females
Taylor (f) et al (2000) - however, proved that the flight or flight response was not a universal behaviour
Evidence suggests that females have evolved from the traditional response and are able to inhibit f/f in order to protect infants and form defensive networks
For example, research into fight or flight response was conducted almost entirely on male animals and assumes that female bio responses will be the same
Evaluation:
Gender differences are commonly presented as fixed and enduring, when often they are not
-
However, does not mean that psychologists should never investigate gender differences
Ingalhalikar et al (2014) - showed that there may be more connections between hemispheres in women, giving biological evidence for the stereotype that women are better at multi tasking
-
-
Alpha Bias - Refers to the theories which exaggerate the differences and focus on the differences between genders
For example, Freud argued that girls do not suffer the same oedipal conflict as boys - they do not identify with their mothers as strangle as boys do with their fathers - so develop weaker super egos
